Also, i dont get everyone's problem with seeing criticism online.. Bands need to be open to criticism, it comes with releasing music to the public..apparently this band has dished its fair share out, so, surely they know that as well as anyone...?
Auckland is small. The scene is lacking at the moment and has been for the last couple of years.
There is probably a 5th of the bands there were between 2004-2008. The attitude towards music has changed also. For the scene to thrive now people should maybe channel their energy into producing something good themselves.
I rekon if you can do a better job then just do it! just get on with it! After all if you REALLY love music and you understand it you will put out something good! and you will put evrything into it...Time,Money etc etc.
First albums are usually raw due to lack of funds.. Im looking forward to what happens in a year or so. Bands mature some what :)
wherever there is the option to post anonymously on forums, people bag out and talk trash..brooklynvegan.com is a good example of this..so, not exclusive to NZ.
It seems there's way more defenders on here than haters anyway.
now regarding the album:
It's not a bad record, i think ppl are misunderstanding the production when they call it smokefree rockquest. it's supposed to be raw and rough around the edges, but that said, i don't know if whoever has recorded it has quite done justice to the songs. There's many examples of this kind of record being made around the world on tiny/non existant budgets right now, and this kind of falls short.
Perhaps it's the vocals? i dunno, anyway, keen to hear where they go from here.
Homebrew much?
Where's this evidence of delusions of granduer? What are you talking about? Their album matches their brattiness to a T! If they had delusions of granduer they'd be adding strings or some Animal Collective-wannabe shit... Street Chant are street-level house party garage pop rock n roll, from the burbs, DIY, hard-working, no nonsense. This record is as direct and unpretentious as it gets. It's snotty and punchy the way SC should be
I am aware that this band is very bratty, petty and mostly plain ridiculous with all their shit talking. if you are going to make obscure comments about other bands or silly posts etc... then your shit better be tight..... and well this album really doesn’t support their delusions of grandeur.
It's no longer a case of tall poppies. Just sour grapes
Have to love the comment from Nevernudes below. apart from that one mature comment, about all ive seen from them lately is online harassment.
1. releasing a great album.
2. Working real hard to get that point.
Street Chant are refreshing. They may not be re inventing the wheel but at least they're writing actual songs with structure, melody and meaning. While so many auckland bands get unfairly hyped up for playing trendy noise with a few delay pedals, Street Chant still manage to convey integrity and rawness to their songs.
On another note its a shame that sex has been brought into this because i'm sure this band in particular wouldn't want that to factor into whether you liked or took them seriously. I also know of a lot of prominent Woman musicians playing this kind of music so it shouldn't even be an issue.
The problem for me wasn't the musicianship it was the songs. There is just was something a bit trite about most of them. Don't get me wrong there are some good moments & they obviously play well together but I just found the whole listening experience a bit underwhelming.
Thats it.
boring music.
