RIP Captain Beefheart

A legendary figure in rock 'n roll, Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, has passed away at the age of 69.

After several line-up changes Vliet formed Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band in 1964 and released Safe as Milk and the legendary double LP Trout Mask Replica on Frank Zappa's Straight Records.

Moving easily between twisted, surreal musicality and more conventional forms of rock and roll, Beefheart retired in 1982.

Yes, RIP Don and condolences to Jan. I first heard this amazing man when Strictly Personal came out in 1968. When he moved onto Zappa's Straight label, I was amazed by Trout Mask Replica. Saw him once at Birmingham Town Hall, England - an unforgettable performance with a belly dancer and ballet dancer.
I later found out that he and Zappa were buddies from school. There is the most amazing jam session going on in heaven right now. Can you hear it?
