Album preview: Wild Beasts - Smother

Album preview: Wild Beasts - Smother

Monday, 2nd May 2011 9:49AM

Wild Beasts released Two Dancers in 2009 and it was a refreshing sonic experience amid a sea of Brit pop, garnering critical acclaim including a 2010 Mercury Prize nomination. Their much anticipated follow-up, Smother, is being released next Monday, May 9th, but we have a preview of the album. Check it out below and head over here to read our interview with lead singer Hayden Thorpe.

Doesn't look like a New Zealand concert is happening so off to Oz to see them.

Every day I have a the chorus of a different smother song in my head. All songs are so demanding, because of the textural richness! This is definately an outstanding acheivement!

I reckon the two albums have different strengths. Two Dancers I'd agree has more stand out tracks, but I feel Smother is a stronger overall effort and a beautifully cohesive album, thought with less stand out tracks. Both f**king brilliant albums though, not sure which one I prefer.

It is by no means a bad album, but for me it lacks 2-3 real stand out tracks. The last album had them in All the kings men, We still got the taste, and hooting. This seems a tad bland, yet still beautiful none the less...
