Video Collection: Big Day Out 2012

Video Collection: Big Day Out 2012

Friday 30th September, 2011 2:01PM

Big Day Out 2012 was announced last night and this morning and the artists on the line-up have released some seriously good videos in their time. We collated our favourite clips from our favourite artists in anticipation of their live performances on Jan 20th next year.

Battles 'Tonto'

It's hard to pick a video clip from a band like Battles - who place almost as much importance on the medium of the music video as they do on the music itself and. The relationship between the two is absolutely intrinsic, which is never more obvious than with 'Tonto'. Directed by United Visual Artists Battles are playing on what looks like the moon as LED lights pulsate around them until they fade out and the day breaks. Incredible.

Best Coast 'Our Deal'

Bethany Cosentino AKA Best Coast recruited Drew Barrymore to direct this slick video for track off her debut album Crazy For You. Chloe Moretz (of Let Me In fame) stars in this Romeo and Juliet style-saga set in a derelict car park and styled in a resolutely fifties way.

Soundgarden 'Black Hole Sun'

Something about the craziness of middle America, something about Suburbia, this weird video clip from 1994 is arguably Soundgarden's most famous song and will shred live next year. Note to Chris Cornell: grow your hair out for some serious headbanging action during this song live please.

My Chemical Romance 'The Black Parade'

While we wouldn't necessarily consider My Chemical Romance one of our most anticipated acts of next years Big Day Out in terms of epic video clips they take the cake. This is their finest, in all of its 'fighting the man' and 'epic tale of woe' form.

Girl Talk 'All Day'

This is cheating a little bit because it's not strictly an official video but New York photographer Jacob Krupnick shot ex-ballerina Anne Marsen dancing around Manhatten to all 373 tracks that feature on Greg Gillis' latest mash-up album. Bring her when you come Greg!

Unknown Mortal Orchestra 'Little Blu House'

They may be relative newcomers to this list but Ruban Neilson's new Portland project is garnering international acclaim - and tour dates! - for its nostalgic psychedelia, which is proffered in the video clip for 'Little Blu House'. Take a model, shoot her in ephemeral outdoor locations just as the sun is rising / setting and you've got the mix of vintage kitsch and new-school cool the blogosphere goes crazy for. Let's contemplate whether they'll have the same amount of on-stage energy / fights / craziness that The Mint Chicks had.

Royksopp 'Remind Me'

These guys won the 2002 Best Music Video gong at the MTV Awards for this animated dissection of the micro-elements that make our macro lives function.

Kanye West 'Monster'

Saving the biggest until last, Kanye West self-reflected on his prolific career with 'Monster'. Love him or hate him it's undeniable that this video clip is seriously impressive; a daring and well executed example of the kind of experience the medium can deliver. Nicki Minaj owns it.
