Arch Hill update

Jul 2005 - An Awful Lot of New Stuff
Arch Hill is about to switch into scrub it up mode with releases, gigs, videos and an-all-out-low-key-music-wahooness…all coming your way. We - the bands, the label, general hangers on - have tee-d it all up, signed the forms in triplicate and strategised our way into six months of good honest straight-up-but-not-too-straight music.

August – BACHELORETTE – EP out 22nd August
First up in the release stakes is Christchurch special solo artist Bachelorette. You may have already seen her fire up the computer, twang the guitar, mash the Moog (ok, its not a Moog – but close enough) opening for SJD at two sold out Odeon shows…well soon you can get your own seven tracker of the songs on CD. We will tell you a whole lot more about this project closer to release – but look out for the release gigs at the Odeon on the 19th of August with Punches (see below) and White Swan (Sonya and Ben from Fang go minimalistic on the Fender Rhodes and guitar). Have a listen to some tracks and a read about Bachelorette on the audio page.

August – GHOSTPLANE – Album out 29th August Look out for Ghostplane with the Children’s Hour Bodega on Friday the 12th of August…
AND Ghostplane have their album in the can – “Beside the Sleepy Lagoon” - featuring a spectacular CD 12 sided artwork cover design. There is a video featuring Monkey Children in Disaster Situations - kapow. Ghostplane deserve to be sitting back (ok – I have got a few jobs for them) feeling pleased with themselves - and awaiting the August 29th release date for their album! Wahoo. We will be telling you a whole lot more about this one, but for now three words: lush, shush and wow. They are also practicing their hammer ons for a tour with the reconvened Mestar band (featuring John White and his regular merry accomplice)s in September. Tour dates will be up on the Arch Hill website shortly, and we’ll give you a little reminder – don’t you worry about that.

September – THE BOXCAR GUITARS AND the Boxcar Guitars are putting the final polish on their six track EP to be released in September, featuring the everybodies favourite “My Love is Blue” and a number of other secret rustic acoustic and more thumping tracks. The band have tee-ed up plenty of live gigs, having already shown their excellent abilities playing with the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, Evan Dando and Lambchop. Look out for them also playing with Howie Gelb on the 22nd of September…and there could be more!

Sometime Soon – GRAND PRIX Grand Prix are from Wellington and D. Dylan D. of A Low Hum Magazine describes them pretty well when he says:

“far more Morricone/ Mariachi than Weissberg /Grand Ole Opry, that is to say, more Nuevo Laredo than Tennessee and it's that south of the border element that defines Grand Prix's latest work. While the lyrical content might continue the racing theme, metaphors aside, it's the atmosphere that the band creates, a certain spaciousness, an ethereal melancholy that draws the listener in.”

They have already recorded an excellent album called “Way of the Racer” which will be released on Arch Hill later in the year…you may have already heard the title track on the radio. Go to the audio page if you want to hear more.

Sometime Soon - PUNCHES Some of you may have heard the excellent track “Four Feet” on you local b-net radio (it went to number ONE on the bFM top ten and number TWO on the Radio Active top ten). Well that song is by the very talented duo of Kelly Stevens (formerly of the Pencils, and also in Voom) and James Duncan (of James Duncan and SJD) with a little help from Gary Sullivan (JPSE, Solid Gold Hell, Dimmer) on the drums. Look out for an EP by them on Arch Hill later in the year.

And if that isn’t enough…
David Kilgour will be playing at the Arc Café with Howie Gelb in September …..we are currently putting together a new Arch Hill compilation…and whew, I hope I haven’t forgotten anything.
