First NZ Artists Invited To SXSW 2006

Further NZ Acts Invited to SXSW

10 New Zealand acts at this stage have been invited to perform at the South by Southwest music convention to be held in Austin, Texas this March.

The artists will be joined by over 200 music industry professionals, operating from government sponsored stands in a combined three day trade show and five day conference filling the daytime hours. At night they'll be competing with over 1200 other bands from around the world who will be showcasing for five nights in 50 venues trying to capture the eyes and ears of over 1000 tastemaker media attendees and talent scouts from labels, booking agents, management companies and publishers.

A whopping 8000 artists from around the world (including 420 from New Zealand and Australia) submitted applications for the coveted one-hour shows that make or break bands to music and media professionals.

New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, in concert with the New Zealand Music Industry Commission, has also booked its fourth annual stand and will hold an opening night party/concert of Kiwi bands.

The New Zealand artists confirmed by their labels, agents, managers or the artists themselves thus far are:

Avotor (Auckland NZ)
The Bats (Christchurch NZ)
The Brunettes (Auckland NZ)
Coco Solid (Auckland NZ)
Die! Die! Die! (Auckland NZ)
The Fanatics (Auckland NZ)
Flip Grater (Christchurch NZ)
Gestalt Switch (Dunedin NZ)
Chris Knox and The Nothing (Auckland NZ)
Ryan McPhun and The Ruby Suns (Auckland NZ)

We look forward to another crop of invitees being announced over the coming weeks.

In other SXSW news, the NZMIC can confirm that the annual NZ Music Function will take place once again on the opening night of the conference. Giving hundreds of international music industry participants an advance opportunity to check out and meet the NZ acts ahead of their individual showcases, this event has become a welcome fixture in the SXSW calendar.
