Hunters, gatherers, purveyors and consumers of all things musical - The Books, for the first time in New Zealand, live at the Monte Cristo Room (complete with the compulsory movie screen for the full Books experience) on January 20th, 2010!
Whispering away at the fringes of the indie music scene since 2000, The Books have spent the last decade in and around New York City crafting and refining their meticulous and eclectic sonic masterpieces. Aural adventurers and archivists, Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong gather their unique music in tiny parts- unearthing sounds lost or forgotten, using them to make a distinctive, beautiful world.
Piecing together an old self help tape or a telephone ring, electronic beats, perhaps a banjo looped and sampled into a kind of timeless space, their songs are where nostalgia splits and spins out in a digital kaleidoscope that shines with vocal fragments and seemingly random sounds that are at once familiar and yet totally foreign.
Their last record proper, Lost and Safe (2005) is a finely wrought and utterly unique take on pop music, carefully constructed from a myriad of sources, standing out as one of the most unusual records in recent years. Rarely playing live, this is a show you won't want to miss.
