The Pleasure Point Sextet is a powerful and exciting group that plays a wide variety of styles, unique arrangements of hard-driving hard bop in the style of Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Roy Hargrove and others, infectious Afro-Cuban and salsa rhythms, Latin jazz, lots of originals, straight-ahead swing, soulful blues and beautiful ballads.
The group was originally formed in 2003 when California-based pianist Steve Abrams came to Wellington, hooked up with his friends there, and did several concerts at Blondinis Jazz Cafe. The group was named after a famous surfing spot in Santa Cruz, California, just down the street from ONeills Surf Shop headquarters.
Pleasure Point Sextet is co-led by the ubiquitous Greg Crayford on drums, second generation of the well-known Crayford jazz family. The hard-driving rhythm section also showcases Cuban-born percussionist, vocalist and dancer, Rafael Ferrer Noel, Alistair Isdale on bass, and pianist, Miles Crayford, and features a stellar front line of James Tait-Jamieson, tenor saxophone and Andy Christiansen, trumpet.
