In late 2008, this remarkable Norwegian returned home after seven years spent carving a reputation on New Zealand’s musical landscape.
As a founding member of the iconic Darcy Perry Band, The Handsome Giants and the Blue Devils, this fine young man also completed two world tours with Tim Finn.
Now he returns for one night in Auckland before three shows at Blues On Broadbeach (Australia), with the Darcy Perry Band.
Darcy says he is excited about the band’s return to Australia, especially since this year will feature the original band line-up.
“This is the line-up that recorded ‘Don’t Hold Back’ and catapulted the band from the bar circuit to the main stages at festivals around New Zealand,” he says.
While all of Darcy’s albums – Blues 4 Dad, Heavy Rain, Too Many Hard Miles and the most recent Phoenix – have earned acclaim, it was ‘Don’t Hold Back’ that pushed the band into the professional spectrum.
The electricity between the band members is palpable and will ensure audiences get a different and high energy dose of Darcy Perry Band this year.
This gathering in Auckland is also a family affair.
The two other acts on the bill feature members of the original Darcy Perry Band.
Opening act The Flaming Mudcats swing the blues so hard they breath smoke and fire, with Craig Bracken’s harmonica fueling most of that fury.
Expect them to take no prisoners.
Completing the line-up will be The Gunsmiths, featuring the driving bass of The Rev. (Paul Merriott).
The Gunsmiths are a three-piece blues rock pirate galleon with soul survivor Paul Smith at the helm.
With an album due out later in the year, they are given the honour of head-lining.
Reunions.
Let’s face it, some are not so great.
However, this is the beloved Darcy Perry Band, renowned for the passion and intensity of their live shows.
This is also a welcome return of Norway’s finest blues piano player, Simen Taylor.
Craig Bracken will blow notes that wake the dead in Chicago and the drum throne will be reclaimed by the righteous Justin Roys.
Paul Merriott will lay down the bass and Darcy Perry will holler and wail on guitar.
This night is bound to be legendary.
There will be thunder and lightning.
You will be moved.
