Amos Mann writes instrumental music, poetry, interpretation of science, and pop songs – or compositions for voice and guitar as he is fond of describing them. He has spent most of his life in Dunedin with some years spent living in Wellington and in Toronto, Canada (close to where he was born). Amoss musical history is exceptionally wide-ranging and includes performance of jazz, hip hop, klezmer, Javanese gamelan, early-baroque, tango and experimental improvisation.
‘Small world, big people’ is an album of songs composed and performed from as early as 1995. The songs engage listeners with fragments of stories and infectious ideas. The music is pop, but as Amos is known to say “…like pop found by American Folkways in an isolated valley somewhere…”
In July 2009, producer Leyton Leyton so generously offered to record this album in the old Radio New Zealand studios, Albany St. Dunedin. While recording, Leyton asked, “If you had just won a million dollars, what would you be doing right now'” Amos replied, “I would be doing this with you.”
