Highly passionate and interactive
Steven Barry on a break from Australia, performs two sets of highly interactive original compositons for CJC. Since leaving for Sydney several years ago, Steven is a fast becoming a force in both the Australian and New Zealand jazz scenes with a strong, passionately creative, improvisational style with compositions to match.
Steven started playing piano at age 5, and has been gigging professionally since age 15. He has received the Most Outstanding Musician, Best Pianist, Best Keyboardist, Best Composition and Band of the Festival Awards from the Tauranga International Jazz Festival Youth Competition.
For the last few years before leaving for Australia Steven held a Friday night residency at Aucklands ‘London Bar’ with a quintet featuring Roger Manins, Peter Barwick and Frank Gibson. Now 20, he has been largely active on the Sydney jazz scene for the past year and also recently toured in New Caledonia with Dale Barlow and George Coleman Jr, son of legendary jazz saxophonist George Coleman.
