Seminal English post-punk band The Fall are to return to Auckland,New Zealand – 28 years after playing the shows which Flying Nun released as the peerless live album, Fall In A Hole.

There have been many live albums since Fall In A Hole, but only one further opportunity to bear witness to The Fall’s uncompromising and unforgettable live experience in New Zealand: and that was 20 years ago. But now Mark E. Smith and The Fall are to set it all straight, and bring their bristling brand of social complaint to the Powerstation on December 13.

Now in their 34th year of existence, The Fall are the rarest of anomalies in pop culture: a band whose currency has risen with each successive release. This year saw Your Future Our Clutter – their 28th studio album – issued to acclaim, astonishment, and admiration.

Mark E. Smith has reshuffled the line-up of The Fall countless times over the years, and as a result, The Fall have remained fresh, vital and energised. Legendary UK DJ John Peel memorably summed up The Fall with the phrase, “Always different, always the same”. The Fall recorded 24 Peel Sessions between 1978 and 2004 – a feat unequalled by anybody else.

Additionally, Smith has lent his inimatable vocal approach to many other artists over the years, including Coldcut, Mouse On Mars, Edwyn Collins, and most recently, Gorillaz on their album Plastic Beach.

The Fall return to New Zealand for the first time in 20 years, this December at the Powerstation. Make sure you don’t miss out on witnessing this band’s legendary scorn and energy on this very rare appearance.

The Fall kept things relevant by a blistering performance of mostly new stuff. No matter how much we (the audience) may have yearned for a collective singalong to Hip Priest, it wasn't gonna happen. Which is a good thing because it would have turned the evening into a sentimental mush of past glories. There was the time honoured Fall stage tradition of members remaining bolted to their designated positions (least they behave like "rock stars". and did anybody else think it strange that Elena Smith kept her handbag on her shoulder through out the gig?. ... And old fuck face. He's stoppped fiddling with mic stands and fiddles with amp knobs instead. He had some odd facial expressions that made me think maybe his dentures don't quite fit. And if he was even half sober I would have been dissapointed.

Right from the first song I was entranced. Big thumpy drums, solid grinding bass sound, no lead breaks-gat and melodic overlay of keys. Sure, Mark E Smith was probably drunk, certainly shambling, weird, whiney and down-right disdainfull, but that's what you'd expect. My mate saw him (with 2 security guards) leaving the pub over the road during the mash-up. They played all new material, but again, you can't expect them to remember the back catalogue - it's too big. I sent them an email about a month ago suggesting they play "No Xmas for John Quays" for a laugh, but knew it was a lost cause. How does he do it? Finds new musos and somehow gets them to produce the same stuff. The rhythm section looked like they had just finished their first lag. Did you notice how lame they sounded when he went off and the band did their own material - then he came back on and things picked up again? Like Mark E Smith says - "Me and your granny on bongos, that's The Fall playing"

Fall Review~ Power Station Dec 13th. Intriguing and at times effervescing..Not quite enough older material for my liking though I really dug "Psychic dance hall" It was hard to gauge if the man was wasted or just getting old? His voice and delivery are unchanged but he now looks like Mr McGoo fused with a Chelsea booky. His wife on keys wore a bemused smirk (and fab 60's inspired hostess dress) between sideways glances at Mark E's wayward nob fiddling of bass and guitar players amps, lyric sheet shuffles and rock'n roll macrame as he slewed/wove between three mic stands on offer...shambolic, loud old wave post punk FUN n games!

I was there! Shambolic, chaotic, loud... everything a rock show should be. Material from Your Future Our Clutter predominated. Smith was as wasted as ever, knocking over the mic stands, tangling up the cords, fiddling with everybody's amps. Packed house, and mostly middle aged, lots of serious moshing down front. Great fun. Support band was Street Chant, who went down well, followed by a guy I think was The Fall's roadie, doing some rather silly computerised mash-ups of videos by Presley, Madonna, Sinead, Donna Summer, Prince and others. Didn't go down too well with the crowd.

WANTED: 2 Tickets to The Fall 28 years ago, my mother - an old punk rocker, went and saw The Fall while nearly 9 months pregnant with me. She was really psyched about seeing them, and preparing to travel to Auckland, but tickets are sold out! If you know anyone who can't make it, or isn't that into them to begin with, please contact me on thefall@elysum.com Even 1 ticket would be awesome. *And* it's her birthday next week! Muchos gracias for the help!
