The 2011 Auckland Arts Festival presents:
MARTHA WAINWRIGHT (Canada)
Beguiling Canadian singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright makes a much anticipated visit to New Zealand with a newly conceptualised performance drawing on her own musical repertoire, as well as that of her family and her gorgeous tribute to Edith Piaf; Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, à Paris: Martha Wainwrights Piaf Record.
As part of the famous Wainwright/McGarrigle musical dynasty – much loved folk singer mother Kate McGarrigle, Grammy Award winning father Loudon Wainwright III and multi-talented brother Rufus – Martha Wainwright was engulfed in a sea of music from childhood. A moving and sensitive performance in the Leonard Cohen tribute concert Came So Far For Beauty and headline shows at top music festivals in Europe and North America have cemented the Brooklyn-based chanteuse’s claim as a bona-fide artist in her own right.
“Immediately, its hard to understand why shes the lesser-known Wainwright – her huge talent could yet eclipse that of her family.”
