Gig Information

St. Rupertsberg, an all-girl octet indie pop band based in Wellington, are excited to announce the launch of their EP Seasonal Glimpse.

St. Rupertsberg was formed in 2009 when band leader Kate Whelen assembled all the musical ladies she knew in a glade beside a dilapidated Newtown mansion. United by an aspiration to create large waves in the male-dominated musical pond, St. Rupertsberg was born.

Seasonal Glimpse reflects St. Rupertsberg’s slightly anarchic, consensus-driven and collective process to song writing and performing. The band’s sound is varied and involves unusual tempo changes, clever harmonies, and artful lyrics.

St Rupertsberg’s infamous Wellington gigs (including Campus A Low Hum 2011) have been known to include inexplicable costumes, bingo and synchronized dance moves. The girls swap instruments on stage (which include trumpets, trombones, synths, clarinets and percussion), and most of them take the role as front woman at some point, which makes for both an inventive live set and recorded sound.

Seasonal Glimpse was recorded and mixed in an intense two day recording session by Lee Prebble at The Surgery in May 2011. The band is delighted with the result—five tracks of fresh pop energy. Seasonal Glimpse is fittingly released on the first day of spring, 1 September 2011.

St. Rupertsberg will do a glimpse of a tour (two-venues) to support the EP’s release, playing Saturday 3 September at the San Francisco Bath House in Wellington with special guests and in Auckland at The Golden Dawn—Tavern of Power on Saturday 24 September with support from Bear Cat.

St. Rupertsberg create a carnivalesque world of hip-hugging rhythms, flourishing horn lines, delicate water-droplet like piano parts and beyond. All iced with a mixture of sung and chanted lyrics.—Martyn Pepperell, Word on the Street
