Toi Maori is proud to present PaoPaoPao Auckland 2011, showcasing a wicked line up of the best of Auckland’s Maori emerging talent in Rock, Indie, Soul Reggae and Funk. Soulful, meaningful music with unmistakable Maori influences.
PaoPaoPao is New Zealands premier music gig for Maāori musicians,convened by Puūatatangi, the music committee of Toi Māori Aotearoa.
This prestigious, must-play gig was first staged in Hamilton in 2003 before moving to Wellington where it has become a regular and much anticipated fixture on the Wellington Arts calendar. The gig has a knack for featuring artists that achieve widespread acclaim such as Maisey Rika, Tama Waipara, Ariana Tikao, Ria Hall, Mara TK, Ruia to name but a few. All enrolled in the kaupapa of bringing Maori music to the fore.
PaoPaoPao showcases Maoridoms musical talent and this year in Auckland it aims to be bigger than ever featuring the very best of Aucklands emerging Maāori music artists in the R & B, soul and funk scene.
The kaupapa of PaoPaoPao comes from the Puatatangi committee objectives, the concert seeks to give expression to the four worlds of Māaori music, namely:
Maori people participating in music
Music Expressing or arising from Māaori experience
Music designed to promote or advance the Māaori language
Music which is an expression of maātauranga Maāori
