Cult blues outfit Storehouse revisit Auckland’s bohemian HQ with more unmissable rent party sounds at the Wine Cellar - and with special guests, it’s sure to be one of the best live music nights the city has to offer.
Recently returned from touring in the UK and US, Storehouse singer/guitarist Tom Rodwell has appeared in nearly 800 concerts internationally since 2003, with a storming hybrid of primitive blues, calypso, spirituals and improvisations that is both critically acclaimed and bizarrely entertaining.
Taking listeners on a journey through the lesser-known alleyways of R&B - with detours to the world of slave music, street preacher raves, uproarious calypso and prison worksongs - Storehouse reinvent and improvise with their material instead of treating it as static and stale. Don’t expect boozy blooze-rock with endless guitar solos or reverent covers, but instead bring your dancing shoes, since Storehouse gigs are long and funky affairs often with unexpected guests.
NME: Tom Rodwell is Sheffield's answer to Lightnin' Hopkins.”
BLUES IN LONDON: Rodwell manages to eschew the cliches that beset blues music. By turns wild, angry, hypnotic and sensual, it's as uncompromising as it is funky and some of the best live music I've seen.
“Look out for Storehouse, singer/guitarist Tom Rodwell’s extraordinary revision of blues and gospel that always gets the joint jumping.” - Gary Steel, METRO, NZ.
You don't hear that anymore. Beautiful groove, beautiful tunes! - Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers).
Wonderful hypnotic boogie, - Joe Cushley (RESONANCE FM, London).
