WAIATA AND THE WORD:

Sometimes I feel like a king,
sometimes I moan in my own prison.
Swaying between these states
I can’t be proud of myself.
This “I” is a figment of my imagination.

This translation of a quatrain by 13th century Persian poet and mystic Rumi was unearthed by Troy Hunt in a book entitled Rumi – Whispers of the Beloved at a friend’s bach in Raumati South on the Kapiti Coast, New Zealand/Aotearoa. He set it to music, and several local musicians hitched a ride on the song’s catchy melody. The piece gathered added meaning when poet Lindsay Rabbitt injected his poem, The Beats, and the project/troupe Waiata and the Word was birthed.

The album is dedicated to musician friend and noted environmentalist Leon Kiel who passed away while the troupe was travelling to its first gig in 2009, and includes songs by Hunt, Phill Simmonds, Sigrid Woolloff, Nigel Patterson, Paul “Boggy” Bognuda and poems by Rabbitt, anchored by bass player Tim Jaray and drummer Luther Hunt and guest musicians. The works in part explore Rumi’s existential conundrum alongside takes of what it means to be human in the 21st century.

FREAKY MEAT are a dynamic and innovative act who have successfully combined elements of Jazz, Funk and Rock with beat-speak styles inspired by Jack Kerouac, C. R. Avery, Gill Scot Heron, and Captain Beefheart.

Premiere Auckland beat-poet Shane Hollands is joined by accomplished musicians John McNab (guitar), James Percy (drums), and Rod Redgrave (bass), who create atmospheric soundscapes which are complemented by Hollands’ mesmerizing narratives of life, travels, experiences and people.

Freaky Meat are seasoned performers in Auckland's live scene, recently joining forces with the likes of Andrew Fagan and The People, Black Sand Diva and The Neo-Kalashnikovs.

In 2010 they released their single 'Monkey Shines' and the follow-up EP: 'Late Night Kebab'.
2011 has seen the release of the single 'Lament of Paris' and their recently released debut album ‘Delicatessen’ which is available now from www.amplifier.co.nz

“[Delicatessen is] full of twists and turns, and moves seamlessly between jazz, rock and funk, reminding me sometimes of Howard Shore’s score for the movie of William S. Burroughs’ Naked Lunch... if you like to delve a bit deeper into your music and are prepared to think of this more as poetry set to music then I think you’d better give this album a listen”
- Alistar Wickens, www.muzic.net.nz

a bit of HLAH + Sam Hunt
- Graham Reid, Elsewhere

APRIL FISH are an alternative duo based in Wellington. They met on Cuba Street towards the end of 2010, where John impressed Katie with his jazz-fused improvisations while busking on his 11-string Warr Guitar.

Combining forces to create a fusion of theatrical vocals, animated piano and solid guitar grooves, April Fish are a lively, up-and-coming act that will leave you wanting more! They recently opened for Amanda Palmer (of The Dresden Dolls) on her 2011 New Zealand tour, and have continued to generate a cult following of their own, both online and at their live shows.

Their independently released debut EP ‘Flailing Beautifully’ is out now and available from http://www.aprilfish.co.nz
