TOMORROW PEOPLE

A studio project turned live stage show, this Wellington 8-piece band are purveyors of what they describe as ‘sunshine reggae’. Focused on providing a mid-tempo sound that, while clearly reggae-centric, adds touches of dancehall ragga to its colour. It is a sound built around strong vocals, soothing harmonies, catchy hooks, aggressive ragga raps, and feel good riddims (rhythms). Taking their name from a Ziggy Marley song, Tomorrow People live up to the futuristic allusions it casts, having built their fanbase via Facebook and tracks uploaded to YouTube.

Predominantly marketing online has allowed the band to preview unreleased songs for their fan base, and they have had an overwhelming response to date with over 110,000 views of their songs in a few short months. Their listenership picks up numbers by the day. 2011 sees the band record their debut album and hit the road to play shows nationwide.

OKU ROOTZ

Lower Hutt based up and coming Oku Rootz showcase a natural and unique roots reggae sound. The name of the band is taken from the Tokelau language ‘oku’ meaning ‘my/mine’ and defines both their sound and their influences. The band members are New Zealand born of Pacific heritage brought up learning the creative arts of their forefathers and also strongly influenced by roots reggae: Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh and Uncle Bob Marley.

Their music has been described by audience listeners as a more upbeat and energetic reggae. They are the new generation of roots reggae with a fusion of Pacific sound and style. The band also plays popular cover songs from across Polynesia in their sets where they share the limelight of lead vocals. Oku Rootz has played across the greater Wellington region. Their musical journey includes a debut album in the near future. Feel the vibe of Oku Rootz energy when they take the stage.

DJ HEMZ

Hailing from Whangarei, sought after DJ Hemz will play his debut set in Wellington.
