Sydney based sax and flute player Michael Gordon is returning to the motherland this December for one special show at New Music Collective’s “Live at the CPSA” on Thursday 1st December.
Michaels music draws from the dogs nuts of the jazz tradition such as Sonny Rollins, Jon Irabagon, Coleman Hawkins, Roland Kirk and antipodean legends Mark Simmonds, Scott Tinkler and Mike Nock.
The trio with Christchurch jazz heavyweight Mike Kime on bass and Australian drummer Finn Ryan is getting together for the first time to chow down on some tasty jazz standards and originals. Michael and Finn have just recorded an album with their band The Cooking Club to be released in 2012.
Finn Ryan has performed extensively at the leading jazz venues throughout Australia.
He is a member of Australia’s only electro-acoustic piano trio ‘3ofmillions’ and the style free African dance ensemble ‘Prophets’. He has performed in Australia for SIMA, Melbourne Jazz Coop, COMA, Jazzgroove, The NOWnow and Make It Up Club with some of Australia’s finest improvisers including Alister Spence, Scott Tinkler, Jim Denley, Mike Majkowski, Aaron Flower, Clayton Thomas, Peter
Farrar, Dale Gorfinkel and many more.
Michael Gordon is a stand-out young saxophonist with ability and ambition. Im sure well be hearing a lot from him in the years to come. - Mike Nock ONZM
