TEEPEE MAGIC, in association with VBC 88.3FM and UNDER THE RADAR presents: PUMP UP THE VOLUME
Wednesday 8 February at San Fransisco Bathhouse, 8pm - - - FREE !
This show starts early for a reason- it has to fit in five brilliant bands, three of whom have never toured to New Zealand before. This is going to be a very loud and exciting evening, where people jitterbug uncontrollably to the exploratory sounds of the new Australia.
BARE GRILLZ come from Newcastle. They say they're reminiscent of So You Think You Can Dance; shrill screaming mixed with hip hop dancing. More like fast and complex guitar music. Vivid, powerful and still intelligent. Like rock, with some of the integrity it's forgotten over the years. Speaking of integrity, they played a number of shows last year as the backing band for ALPS. High implied praise! http://bare-grillz.bandcamp.com/
NO ART come from Sydney and are regularly compared to Sonic Youth, Liars and The Church. Their specially constructed long form work, Snaky Looking, was even featured on ABC Radio National's Quiet Spaces, a grand accomplishment for a band so invested in boundary pushing and tonal deconstruction. They don't sound like hip-hop dancing at all. They sound more like an evening dying under the slow weight of stars. Seriously. http://listn.to/noart/player
ASSASSINS 88 come from Canberra. How fun it can be to play really, really, seriously fast and loud. Their music fills out the spectrum with overdriven guitars and harsh, crisp cymbals; there is no space for abstract contemplation. Movement is usually mandatory. Every so often, though, they'll drop some harmonies out of the sky, slow it down a little and keep you guessing. They keep me interested. http://assassins.bandcamp.com/
HEADSPINS come from Auckland. They are dark and propulsive and exorcise the energies of their youth through granular and varied postpunk. Headspins lack the drowsiness of many who imitate that timeless sound, replacing it, instead, with a raw sleeplessness that charges their music with feeling. http://headspins.bandcamp.com/
CARB ON CARB come from Wellington. They used to have other members and be called Mammal Airlines. James and Nicole's music: liveliness, clarity, focused simplicity and distortion are among them. Be impressed with their directness and energy as performers. Listen to the ringing in your ears. It will stay with you for months.
It is FREE. There are awesome DRINK SPECIALS and special MEGA SECRET DJs, Come to it and get all excited for that big festival that starts two days later!
