Storehouse's Tom Rodwell finally gets around to putting out a CD - Live Humble, recorded in London, 2010. A subtle and compact collection of spirituals, work-songs and improvised music departing from a basis in low-tech blues into atmospheric new territories, LH will repay repeated listens.
This is no dry exercise in ethnomusicology but a subtle reinvention of the most daring and entertaining aspects of music styles long thought atrophied, and with just voice and guitar (and odd smatters of percussion), he wills it alive.
**** Gary Steel - Metro, March 2012.
There’s a beautiful sort of Yin and Yang at work in Rodwell’s music. His
voice and guitar seem to be in a constant dialogue with one another, one
taking over as the other steps back, and vice-versa. And the deep internal
rhythms that underpin the whole thing rock back and forth as well, like a finely balanced see-saw. Tom Rodwell’s Live Humble is a masterful set and all the more so for its apparent simplicity.
- Nick Bollinger, Radio New Zealand, January 2012.
