ALL THE STUPID SMILING FACES TOUR 2009
Following the release of their brilliant debut album ‘All The Stupid Smiling Faces’, Insurgents celebrate in explosive style with a nationwide tour.
In the three years after they formed in Christchurch in 2004, with the bare bones of duo Chris Young (vocals/guitar) and David Coffey (drums/percussion), Insurgents incorporated the talents of Mike Ellis (vocals/bass/keys) and Will Edmonds (guitar/vocals/keys) to morph grunge punk noise into dirty, melodic pop.
In May 2008 the band sadly closed a door on the project with a final gig - the infamous Hot Pants Party (a joint EP release show with Bang!Bang!Eche).Accomplished producer Rob Mayes of Failsafe Records approached them when they finished what they thought would be their last live performance, and reminded them that riotous parties and pop ferocity should never be laid to rest.
With this in mind, the band decided to reunite and prepared for two weeks of intense recording - compiling session material never heard before. All The Stupid Smiling Faces emerged, a final memoir to unforgettable late nights and creative adventures with friends and fiends around the country.
Through the summer night nostalgia of tracks like ‘Playing Guitars and Smoking Cigars’ and ‘Camille’ to the social frustrations of ‘Rather Be Dead’ and ‘Ezi Luvas 69’, the album dances ambitiously through an array of influences. Raging and tender, naïve and cynical, the contradictions summed up in its title are oddly the very things that make ‘All the Stupid Smiling Faces’such an engrossing and complete debut for a band barely in their 20s.
With the addition of Perry Mahony (vibes) and a little help from friends such as Bang!Bang!Eche!, The Transistors, Sora Shima, Moron Says What and God Bows to Math, Insurgents will be bringing the party to Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Port Chalmers and of course Christchurch in April.
