Jo Little at Modaks 19 May
The soothing ballads of Jo Little, mixed with the home-away-from-home comforts of Modaks Espresso created a combination worth attending on a chilly Thursday afternoon. In celebration of New Zealand Music Month, Modak’s has been hosting a variety of intimate musical events, showcasing Dunedin’s café-appropriate musicians every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

On Thursday May 19th, Jo Little, who you may recognize as the lead singer of Midnight Kitchen treated café attendees with a little, …ha, entertainment. Creating an ideal soundtrack to their coffee drinking experience, she played original songs as well as three covers. The acoustic set was truly a treat. Little has a comforting and strong voice and her music draws on influences ranging from grunge to soul, and artists such as Pearl Jam and PJ Harvey. One of the covers, Elton John’s Rocket Man, even started a bit of a sing-a-long throughout the café. However, her original songs were definitely a highlight. Little recently released an EP entitled Mix Tape, which I definitely recommend experiencing for yourself on her bandcamp: [http://jolittle.bandcamp.com/album/mix-tape]

Coffee, music, good people, ….doesn’t get much better than that!

Also, be sure to check out Modak’s musical experience this Saturday, May 28th, at their Dunedin Music Showcase from 7pm-12pm.

Happy New Zealand Music Month!
