Multidisciplinary artist and founder of NOA Records, Rāhana Tito-Taylor is carving a path as an exponent of taonga puoro (traditional Māori instruments), psychedelic groove music and avant-garde beats. Engaging in influential musical projects since the mid 2010’s under the monicker WAIWHAI. (fka Whyfi.), Rāhana is crucially recontextualising taonga puoro into the modern scene with an irreverent style and technical prestige. Pepe Tuna Productions’ Salvador Brown visited Rāhana in Te Tai Tokerau ahead of a 2025 exhibition showcasing his initial developments of taonga puoro centric saxophone mouthpieces. These pieces accredit his innate contemporary approach to adapting concepts rooted in te ao Maori, breathing life into their evolutions through time.
