KA RONGO KOE KI TE WAIATA O TE KŌIWI? Can you hear the song of the bone?
Supported by Creative NZ - Gigi Crayford under 'HINE' presents the debut EP ‘KA MUA KA MURI’. A musical journey tracing the threads of Whakapapa, exploring relationship to Atua, Pūrākau and the transformation of learning an ancestral tongue. Recorded on ancestrally affiliated land with full instrumentation by herself and her whānau, this project is drawn from deep wells of meaning and connection.
“GiGi’s soulful voice has an ancient quality, that feels whole and embodied. There is a depth that is rare and potent.” - Ariana Tikao, renowned practitioner and composer of taonga pūoro, and an established writer and poet.
“Mesmerising, theatrical and soulful reo” - Toni Huata - Former director of SOUNZ, Singer, Composer and legendary Māori performer
‘KA MUA KA MURI EP’ weaves Taonga Pūoro, sonic storytelling, poetry and Gigi's original folk noir style in both English and Te Reo Māori. A singer-songwriter on Autoharp, Guitar and Piano, Gigi is supported by brother Miles Crayford on Organ, father Greg Crayford on drums, Charlie Budd on Taonga Pūoro and Aslan Rowlands on Electric Guitar. Echoing the emotionally drenched lyricism of Joni Mitchell, enigmatic voice akin to Kate Bush & soaring ecstatic moments like Pink Floyd. Interwoven with Taonga Pūoro; creating a contemporary genre-bending experience. HINE reverberates with authentic expression, wahine power & the vital place music has in healing & self discovery.
With her maiden single release and successful show at MĀORILAND ŌTAKI in 2024 for’ KA MUA KA MURI’ HINE explored the grief of living in a matrix paved over matriarch world and the journey of remembering to return to the earth from a human-centric culture.
This tour releases the final 4 songs of the EP. Each an ode to a different Atua Māreikura, ranging from Papatūānuku, Hine Te Iwa Iwa, Murirangawhenua, Hine Moana, Hine Raukatauri & Hine Takurua.
Shows in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Paekākāriki, Pōneke Wellington and Ōhinehou Lyttelton.
