After years of driving the ska locomotive with world-famous-on-Waiheke’s Radio Rebelde, seven of its musos are taking a detour. Not a side project: a new band with a new sound.
L/Mono (pronounced El Mono) will launch freshly written original material, swapping guitars for keyboards and opening the door to whatever comes through. Psychedelic '60's and ’70s rock and extended jams collide with disco, dub, trance and Latin rhythms — sometimes locked into dirty grooves, sometimes slipping sideways into melodic hooks, hypnotic passages, sudden turns to something altogether stranger.
Picture Manzarek's Hammond in a seedy Brooklyn bar jamming with a crew of NYC Latin musos. Then relocate the session between Waiheke and Buenos Aires, filter it through late-’60s L.A., add some ’70s cologne, and let it loose. Spanish and English vocals move through keys, saxophones, bass, groovy percussion and an unruly mix of sounds that doesn’t owe much to genre boundaries. It can feel like a forgotten ’70s exploitation soundtrack or a late-night Latin dancefloor somewhere you cannot remember.
L/Mono is seven familiar faces making unfamiliar music — leaving the map behind and seeing where the groove takes them.
