Acoustic Routes Singer Songwriters Special, Meow, 27 June, 8 pm

When it comes to organising a singer songwriters concert, we really are spoiled for choice. We've opted for a mixture of some veteran performers and a musician whose song-writing talents are just emerging. Be ready for a diverse and interesting evening.

DON FRANKS
Don Franks is a Wellington music teacher and performer. Tawa College night class guitar teacher, resident pianist at Daddy O's restaurant and band leader at the Pines. An occasional singer song writer over the past 35 years, Don's work has mostly been in the form of protest songs, aired at many pickets, marches and union meetings.

JUDE MADILL
Jude grew up in Dunedin in a musical family - there was always music being played or listened to. She has ‘sung forever’ (though never professionally) and, apart from the rock years, played for a while. Song writing is a relatively recent thing. For a good part of her musical life, she only sang and played other people’s music. Then, quite suddenly at 30-something, she started writing songs herself. Most of her original music falls somewhere in the folk/alt-country box although her musical inspiration comes from a lot of different genres (there are a few
electronic experiments out there on the interweb). She’s not always too sure where the words come from.

DAVE MURPHY
Dave Murphy has been described as a New Zealand blues institution- a fingerstyle guitar legend and one of the country's best interpreters of the blues. Dave's been playing blues since he was 15, influenced by early musicians such as Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy and Robert Johnson, but developing and honing his own individual style as well. Dave's paid his blues dues in hundreds of venues, playing solo and in bands. He has also played alongside some of the contemporary blues greats, including Champion Jack Dupree, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Robert Jr Lockwood and Eugene Powell. Along the way he's penned some of his own songs. A couple of those, Yes That's Me By The Cigarette Machine and The Night Roy's Was Closed, featured on his album and DVD released five years ago.
It's Dave Murphy originals we'll be hearing at the June concert, played with the passion and style we know him for.

PORTABLE PANIC
With their own unique take on music, song writing and song Jenny Kilpatrick & Tony Ricketts are PORTABLE PANIC. Tony originally came from the UK, played folk clubs there, and began writing in 1975, then moved to Auckland in 1979. He recorded ‘Special Delivery’ in 1988 and has had stints with various bands including Easy St and Tattie Jock. Tony sings, plays acoustic guitar and another spot of electric bass, and since 1998 has also run Portable Panic Recording, working mainly with folkie musicians. Jenny is originally from Wellington, where she was introduced to folkdom by her big brother Murray. As a student, she built up her early repertoire of mainly British Trad in Mumble. Joining Tony in Easy St, Jenny expanded her repertoire including Tony's songs and the jazzy-bluesy women of the 40s and 50s. As well as singing she plays recorder, whistle, a spot of electric bass and a mean kazoo. In 2012 their stars led them to Island Bay, where they plan to live happily ever after.
