November 2013, Wellington: Newtown Rocksteady video release party for their 2013 single ‘Something to Say’ at the San Francisco Bathhouse on November 22nd.
Filmed at Baobab Café in Newtown on the celebration of their 5th birthday, this video is close to band members’ hearts. The footage is of a band on their home turf playing for a home crowd on one of those rare days that Wellingtonians crave, nary a breath of wind, the sun beats down on body parts-young and old- that may not have seen that luminous sphere for months.
The locals came, the band conquered and what you see is basically Newtown Rocksteady doing what they do best, creating a vibe based on audience participation and interaction and enjoying playing to a crowd of familiar familial faces. Baobab co-owner, Gabe Johnson says ‘When Rocksteady took the stage the party kicked up a gear, everyone was on their feet dancing, grooving to the rhythms, loving it.’
The New Video, made by Mark Russell of Adventure Artists, will be exclusively released on www.undertheradar.co.nz on Thursday 21st November, the day before the release party at San Francisco Bathhouse.
Comprised of highly active members of Wellington’s vibrant music scene, Newtown Rocksteady has a great depth of experience to call upon. Its members have been involved in numerous other groups including The Nudge, Hikoikoi, Fly My Pretties, Trinity Roots, Brockaflowersaurus-rex, Roy G and the Bivinators, Bella Cajon, Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band and Zirigidum to name a few. The band has its roots firmly embedded in the traditions of Jamaican rocksteady, ska and reggae music and is further nourished by its connection with its community. They will be spreading the love with a South Island tour in January 2014.
Newtown Rocksteady will celebrate the release of their video with a party at the San Francisco Bathhouse on Friday 22nd of November. With support from DJ Art and Newtown Sound, the night will be one to catch if you are itching to get down to the sound of Newtown.
