Since his debut full length in 2008, Justin Townes Earle has toured and recorded constantly. He won 'Best New and Emerging Artist' at the 2009 Americana Music Awards and was named by GQ Magazine as one of “The 25 Most Stylish Men in the World” in 2010. He has also appeared on HBO's Treme with his father, Steve Earle, on whose Grammy Award winning record Townes, he also guested.
On a rainy Nashville day in October 2011, Earle leapt onstage at the famed Ryman Auditorium to accept the Americana Music Award for ‘Song of the Year’. In 2012, he got behind the boards and produced Unfinished Business for the legendary Wanda Jackson.
2014 will see Earle release his fifth studio album, Single Mothers. With inspirations as diverse as Townes Van Zandt (he was named in honor of the elder Earle's hero), Jimmy Reed, Kurt Cobain, The Replacements, Mance Lipscomb, Ray Charles and The Pogues; Justin forges his own brand of American roots music. Going through life with a namesake of Van Zandt's stature cannot be easy for a young songwriter, but Earle takes it in his stride,' saying, “Anyone who tries to live up to Van Zandt is a fool. I'm honored to carry the name, but if I spent my life trying to live up to it, I'd have a pretty miserable life.”
Earle is no stranger to NZ shores, but this tour will mark the first time he’s brought along his full band for the ride to help him recreate the luscious tracks of Single Mothers as well as choice selections from his critically lauded previous releases The Good Life, Midnight At The Movies, Harlem River Blues and Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now.
SPECIAL GUEST MARLON WILLIAMS
Described as the impossible love child of Elvis, Roy Orbison and Townes Van Zandt, Marlon Williams is a 2-time New Zealand Music Award winning singer-songwriter touted by leading Australian folk/roots Magazine Rhythms as the Artist To Watch in 2014.
Living up to the hype, Williams has featured on SBS' Rockwiz, performed at the Sydney Opera House for TEDx Sydney, been invited to support First Aid Kit and Justin Townes Earle in Australia, joined the line ups for Meredith, Queenscliff, Darwin, Mullumbimby and Wave Rock Festivals and released a new single Strange Things, selling out release shows around New Zealand and Australia.
Marlon is the first person to have headlined at the Tuning Fork twice, having played here with Delaney Davidson in March this year, and with Melody Pool and Aldous Harding in July. Reviewing the latter show, 13th Floor.co.nz's Marty Duda said Marlon possesses one of the purist voices in the country and he showed it off to full effect.
Williams much anticipated debut solo album will be released in early 2015.
