Previously leading bands like Shogun Orchestra and The Troubles, as well as being a member of premier acts The Black Seeds, The Yoots and Lord Echo, Lucien Johnson is a saxophonist and composer of rare excellence and mettle. He is one of a very few artists performing and writing currently who deserves to be both revered and respectfully feared; revered because of his skill, and feared because he casts a tall and ominous shadow over jazz and how it should be played.
A rare combination of musical skill, knowledge and gutsy, intuitive jazz sensibilities, he is an artist impossible to forget.
Lucien has made music for many live theatre and dance shows, as well as TV and film. He also lived in Paris for several years, playing with some of the legends of free-jazz as well as touring Europe, the US, Brazil, India, Haiti, Japan, China and the Pacific with various ensembles.
Meow is proud to exclusively host Lucien’s album release show during the Wellington Jazz Festival.
