I just know this is what Id like to see, and I aint special enough to be into music that only I get. I know that there are other people out there thatll be on the same page. You just gotta trust me I guess - Tom Scott
East London is still a melting pot, and no one personifies its cultural potential more than creative polymaths like young Ghanaian-British mixed media artist, spoken word poet, and musician Kojey Radical. With his album 23Winters, Kojey built on the legacy of genre non-conformist Black English artists like Roots Manuva, Dean Blunt, and Ghostpoet, gifting us a soundworld as multifaceted as his citys urban street markets.
On June 23rd at Whammy Bar, Kojey Radical will be joined by Team Dynamite, MELODOWNZ, and newcomers Shiraz & LSJ.
Two of the leading lights from young Auckland creative arts collective The Grow Room, Shiraz and LSJ were the minds behind one of the best local rap debuts of 2016. Mixing wonky sampledelic beats with vivid, witty rhyme schemes and catchy cadences, their Jive Days album successfully pulled off the rare hat-trick of being nostalgic, slickly stylish, and forward-focused in concert. Who else is dropping rap records that recall Madlib and Camron at the same time These kids are doing what took me twice the life to do in half the time, and making the evolution of the art form look exponential, enthuses Tom Scott. Shiraz has the vocal of an English professor. I dont even know how he knows half the shit he flows about.
Lineup by lineup, both shows illustrate the importance of Young, Gifted & Brokes role in promoting local rap music, and introducing audiences around the country to exciting new international talent as it bubbles up from the underground. As always, Tom Scott continues to put his Sound Select showcases together around his simple yet uncompromising guidelines.
