RICHTER CITY REBELS are back in the AK for another round of heavy-grooving, heard-hitting New Orleans funk, hip-hop and soul.
This show features Auckland Afrofunk/Hip-hop stylebender Unchained XL with live band and DJ sets from Matt Bizzle.
RICHTER CITY REBELS music is heavy and soulful. Blending RnB, soul, hip-hop, jazz and funk, it grooves deeply and pulsates with pounding bass and searing brass. Catchy vocals and chants draw the crowd into the party and the rolling, infectious sound is punctuated by the fierce crack of drums and percussion. The music has the soul and charisma of James Brown, mixed with the effortless swagger of Big Daddy Kane. When it hits you, you cant help but dance and feel good!
Their energetic show has recently headlined at events including the Wellington Jazz Festival, Tora Tora Tora, Taranaki Arts Festival, National Jazz Festival, CubaDupa, and Meridian Gardens Magic. Crowds line up for their monthly residency at popular Wellington venues Havana and The Rogue and Vagabond, and they also tour New Zealand regularly.
UNCHAINED XL is a UK Born Nigerian Hiphop artist and producer with a unique, afrocentric sound easily recognizable as his own. His 2018 debut EP release entitled ‘Foreign Legacy’ blends traditional afrofunk and afrobeat inspired textures and rhythms with various styles of hiphop, utilising a combination of live instruments and synths. 2018 saw UXL’s reach expand globally, as he toured the UK with shows in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Leeds and Cardiff, performing alongside artists such as Mungos HiFi, Afro Cluster and Eva Lazarus.
