CJC Xmas Party with Ijebu Pleasure Club
For our last gig of the year, we wanted to bring you something a bit different!
Ijebu Pleasure Club takes you to Nigeria in 1987, where a small town Afrobeat band have just been told they need to play American top 40 hits to keep their nightclub gig. They don’t own any of the records, but they’re going to give it a try...
Mashing up the music you remember (and some that’s best forgotten) with the Nigerian funk style of Fela Kuti, and about a dozen musicians, this band will surprise and delight.
Ijebu Pleasure Club will show you that all music comes from mother-Africa.
Led by our own Ben McNicoll, who you’ll know from behind the sound desk, the band has been filling dance floors in bars and clubs around Auckland, and playing festivals such as Splore. This is the band’s first outing at CJC.
For this gig, they’ll do a deep dive into the the Nigerian Funk & Jazz influenced Afrobeat music of Fela Kuti, before heading off on their own interpretations of 80’s pop, as seen through that lens.
Dancing will not only be encouraged, we defy you to stand still!
Come and celebrate the end of a great year of jazz with us!
