Gig Information

The Band
Founded in 1987, as VozNueva (Spanish for New Voice), then VoxNova for a while specialising in Jazz Manouche, the band has recently returned to its founding roots as VozNueva performing vintage and contemporary Latin and Gitanos (Spanish Gypsy). The band has enjoyed/enjoys many lengthy residencies, self-run concerts, and is highly regarded by Auckland Jazz & Blues Club. The band has hosted musicians from all over the globe, each leaving a trace on the sound and repertoire.

The Music
Inspired mainly by the Flamenco Rumba style made famous by Gypsy Kings plus Brazilian rhythms, the list of composers work performed include: Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Buena Vista Social Club, Joao Gilberto, Carlos Santana, Gypsy Kings.

Band Members
Alan MacDonald, born in Scotland, Alan created the band in 1997 after a career as a creative director. Now manager’performer of three bands (+ Zydecosis, Cajynx) and art career that has seen work exhibited in New York. Alan enjoys performing with musicians at the top of their artform as well as performing at the best venues.
Nigel Gavin, originally from Long Island, New York, is a leading figure, teacher, performer, composer, locally and internationally. Nigel has performed with well-known groups such as, Nairobi Trio, the Fondue Set, the Jews Brothers, the Blue Bottom Stompers, Gitbox Rebellion, now returned to Voxnova after a break of a few years.
Ricky De Medieros from Brazil is a master of fingerstyle, fiery flamenco techniques and Latin grooves that blend well with Nigel’s contemporary jazz style. A fulltime teacher, performing, and recording artist, Ricky has performed with a number of well-known performers including : NZ/Russian singer Yulia, Latin Grammy Award Winner Romulo Castro, and Jimmy Kara Ricky as AcoustiCartel, currently recording their first album.
Aaron Codell, is a former member now returned to VozNueva after gaining a great deal of experience performing for jazz greats Cleo Laine, Mark Murphy and saxophonist George Coleman, Annie Crummer, Hello Sailor, King Kapisi, as well as vocalists Caitlin Smith, Jan Hellriegel and Linn Lorkin. Aaron has also supported a long list of theatrical productions and occasionally moonlights with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra.
