Gig Information

Grawlixes are a Wellington-by-way-of-Dunedin indie-folk band intent on inserting themselves into your brain with their intelligent, infectious songs about relationships and not being invited to parties. Continuing the great lineage of artists who bring sadness to their sprightly melodies, Grawlixes’s music often deals in the melancholy with self-deprecating honesty and beautiful boy-girl harmonies, sung by co-founders Robin Cederman (Tahu & the Takahes) and Penelope Esplin (French for Rabbits, Moonlander, Lake South).
Grawlixes have recently expanded into a 5 piece, featuring the unimitable talents of Alex Vaastra (Emily Fairlight, Julian Temple Band) on violin, Emma Hattaway (The Cosmonauts) on bass and Hikurangi Schaverien-Kaa (Stellarize, French for Rabbits) on drums, and are gearing up for the release of their second album Love you to Death' in 2021.

Scott from When You Motor Away says Grawlixes 'melodies are delicate, intricate, and sweet, while the themes tend toward melancholy and clear-eyed realism, and particularly clear-eyed realism about melancholy-inducing relationships…Infectious and intelligent'
Freya McGahey from Happy (Australia) says “Speaking with spine tingling and ethereal impact,
Grawlixes set themselves apart as two distinguished songwriters
Fraser Browne of Second Hand News calls Grawlixes A must listen.”

**Featuring Support From Mali Mali**
The artist known as Mali Mali makes for inspired, disarming listening. With flowing piano melodies echoing Elliott Smith and delicately constructed layers of texture akin to the post-rock musings of Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mali Mali (real name Ben Tolich) elegantly tows a line between classic pop-songwriting and aural experimentation.
Debut album Gather ’round the Gooseclock (2013; recorded in tropical Cairns by Mark Myers of The Middle East) caught the attention of many and 2016’s follow-up As a Dog Dreams earned accolades the country over. Shockingly, the record was Tolich’s first attempt at home production and engineering – the reception was anything but amateur. “In an age when people protect themselves or present an ego in their absence, this sounds courageous”, said Graham Reid of As a Dog Dreams.
