This is a koha event. Spaces are limited. If you would like to attend this workshop please email info@soundexplorers.co.nz to register.

In this P-LAB artist workshop, Mark Williams (Cookie Brooklyn & the Crumbs) introduces 8 music videos made 2015-21 in NZ, Thailand and Germany, and a 20 minute experimental film by Canadian artist Alex Larose featuring a soundtrack by Williams and Andy Wright.

In and around the pandemic I've been shooting ultra shonky music videos. Mostly they're scarcely believable horror films inspired by 50s home movies, the nightmare of the suburbs, and a teddy bears picnic in Te Puke. These are for the upcoming Cookie Brooklyn and the Crumbs album and mostly unseen. I'm also going to show these plus some other videos shot in Thailand and elsewhere, while working in these places as a film programmer. These videos were made for solo and band music projects, and seem to be picking up weird undercurrents of state surveillance... I should probably acknowledge my own voyeuristic interest in watching people eat kebabs and preparing meat.

The evening will end with a screening of St Bathans Repetitions, a 20 minute film by Canadian artist Alex Larose, which features a soundtrack by Williams and Andy Wright. The film was shot on 35mm film and is composed of multiple layered images of scenes set in the South Island. It showed at Hamburg Film Festival in 2019, but has never screened in Aotearoa with Williams and Wright's soundtrack.

Mark Williams, an independent curator based in Wellington. Formerly Exhibitions Manager at the New Zealand Film Archive 2004-2011. Mark is the Director/Curator of CIRCUIT artist film and video Aotearoa.
