Gig Information

Waiheke Island's Rocky Bay Folk Club are pleased to welcome NZ-Australian songwriter Kerryn Fields for an intimate concert following her appearance at the Auckland Folk Festival.

Fuelled by reverence, integrity and a deep spiritual connection to the human experience, Kerryn Fields paints timeless musical portraits that do what others rarely can: bring us home to ourselves.

Kerryn Fields grew up in Te Kūiti, a North Island farming community in which both her family and others’ worked tirelessly to make ends meet. A 2007 relocation to Melbourne would inject fresh energy and vision into her songwriting. Touring extensively around Australia, NZ and Canada for the next 13 years with the help of her much-loved camper van, Fields would soon come to realise that something significant was missing. Come 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, a most extraordinary thing happened: Aotearoa called Kerryn Fields back home.

Radiating warmth, humor and a depth of character that’s palpable as soon as she enters a room, Fields utilises music and storytelling as a vehicle for doing what she does best: making peace with her own human existence. It’s because of this startling ability to meet and embrace herself so willingly that others feel able to do the same.

As an opening act we are excited to have Waiheke's own Sammy Leary. Born in a barn and raised by artist parents on a mixture of contemporary and traditional folk music, Leary is a bona fide historian, musicologist and multi-instrumentalist who has been performing since his school years, fronting cult favourite bands Moosmbasil, Swampy Tonk, The Royal Fortune and Gráinneog. His tales of old New Zealand and its traditional music connect audiences to a shared history now near forgotten. For this solo show he will be performing a selection of traditional and original New Zealand folk songs on tenor banjo and the musical saw.

These two are the amongst the finest and most unique folk acts in Aotearoa just now - come along and say you were there!
