Gig Information

Pyramid Club presents renowned Aotearoa sound artist Phil Dadson in different settings over two days: on Friday 10 November Phil performs duo with Rob Thorne at Pyramid Club and on Saturday 11 November Phil performs solo at Futuna Chapel followed by a panel talk exploring the work and legacy of NZ artist Jim Allen.

'Aurongo/Inner Listening' is a new album by Phil Dadson and Rob Thorne, released on Rattle Records. The double CD pairs Dadson’s invented instruments with Thorne’s traditional Māori instruments made of stone, bone, shell and wood. The two albums are cut from the same cloth. The first, mixed by Colleen Brennan, presents the original, improvised duo recordings, with Phil playing his unique, multi-voiced, self-made instrument, the “gloop”, and Rob playing his kete of evocative, often powerful taonga pūoro with clarity, presence and precision. For the second album, Rattle’s Steve Garden took a more improvised approach to the mix, reshaping the raw material to create three suites that take the listener through a series of different and sometimes unexpected sonic landscapes.

For the album release gig at Pyramid Club, Phil and Rob will perform a live duo set, followed by a deep listening session to the second of Aurongo/Inner Listening's two albums (30mins) and a Q&A by the artists.

____________________

Phil Dadson (ONZM) is one of New Zealand’s most important living artists and a seminal figure in the history of sonic arts in Aotearoa. His highly inventive trans-disciplinary approach encompasses experimental musical instruments and sonic objects, video/sound installation, music composition, graphic scores, drawing, sound sculptures, improvisation and collaboration. Founded in 1974, From Scratch was Dadson’s central creative outlet through the 1970s and 1980s, producing internationally celebrated performance works encompassing Dadson’s mixed interests in instrument making, composition and visual aesthetics and underpinned by environmental and political themes. Since the group’s heyday in the early 1980s Phil has continued to create with interminable energy, exhibiting, performing and producing solo and collaborative work around the globe.

Rob Thorne (Ngāti Tumutumu) is a composer, performer of Taonga Pūoro, fusing modern looping technology and traditional Māori flutes and horns made from stone, bone, shell and wood. His debut solo album Whaia te Maramatanga (Rattle Records) is a deeply felt and highly concentrated conversation between the past and the present - a musical passage of identity and connection. Rob has over 25 years performance experience in bands and solo, predominantly within alternative rock, free noise, experimental, and improvisational sound art. His work since 2001 with traditional Māori musical instruments has seen him complete an MA in Social Anthropology, and since 2008, incorporate this diverse experience to create long, ambient compositions using loops, blending the modern with the ancient.
