As part of Ivan Mršić's Mashup exhibition he has invited members of Pyramid Club to join him in a night of musical collaboration.
Improvisors will be randomly drawn into unique trios and will musically respond to Mršić's projected works. These trios form a real-time spontaneous form of collaborative creativity that is open to exploration, enabling the articulation of thought, and for feeling to be expressed and experienced together.
Ivan's scores are like maps, charts for sonic navigation - with little or no reference for orthodox composition - visual works that are open to wildly different interpretations and an exploration of the shifting and illuminating relationship between images and sound.
Ivan Mršić
Ivan Mršić is a prolific interdisciplinary visual artist, percussionist, composer and improviser whose long-running practice builds on the foundations of avant-garde music, performance, experimentation and art.
In the expansive field of improvised music, Mršić’s practice operates on the assumption that virtually anything can become an instrument under certain conditions. This expanded understanding of sculpture, sound, music and musical instruments has guided Mršić in his work with discarded everyday objects.
He has a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, and studied percussion at the Conservatory of Music, Montreux, Switzerland.
Bridget Kelly
Bridget Kelly has a unique creative voice on reeds, moving from lyrical melodies to unearthly growls. Performing also with harp and tāonga pūoro, she's been a constant presence in the Wellington music scene for the past 20 years.
Kieran Monaghan (Mr Sterile Assembly, vegetable.machine.animal)
Kieran Monaghan's musical entrance started deep in the bowels of Southland. He gravitated towards, raucous noise; from politically charged and D.I.Y punk rock, the nihilism of New York No-Wave, to the ear-bending found-sound approaches of pre-digital Industrial music. Moving to Wellington in the 90's presented ear-entering exposure and collaboration with unruly noise, free-form jazz and rhythmless soundscapes.
Gerard Crewdson
Gerard Crewdson is a multi-instrumentalist specialising in brass instruments as well as visual artist. Gerard is a celebrated Pyramid Club regular and has been a fixture of the Te Whanganui-a-Tara improvisation scene for several decades.
Erika Grant
Erika Grant is a musician and astrologer. Over the past few years she has developed a sound bathing practice using gongs, bowls and chimes. She is interested in the healing properties of sound for mental and physical wellbeing.
Andy Wright
Andy Wright is a Pōneke-based polyrhythmic polymath. An exceptional drummer with a powerfully light touch that drives music forwards and on detours of subtle relationships and nuanced listening. Drumming in groups such as Full Fucking Moon and Orchestra of Spheres he has often brought the party, and can also be found improvising regularly at Pyramid Club in more deep listening contexts. He is also the designer of the Pyramid Club logo and an artist of free gesture that embrace the power of drawing to move beyond the familiar and nameable and into the ambiguous.
Mashup by Ivan Mršić opens on Rāpare 24th April 6-8PM at Pyramid Club
