The musicians are Neil Billington an acknowledged virtuoso on the harmonica and regarded as one of New Zealand’s best, Nick Granville a professional guitarist who works with a diverse range of sounds and styles, Patrick Bleakly a much loved musician on the national music scene playing bass and Darren Mathiassen a well-known and in-demand drummer.
The band performs a mixture of Jazz standards from the American Songbook and Chicago and West Coast Blues. The band’s repertoire includes music by soloists like Charlie Parker some of the great blues men such as Muddy waters, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson.
Neil Billington’s harmonica sets the flavour of the band and his acknowledged virtuosity extends from the styles of the great Chicago masters to chromatic jazz harmonica of the great Toots Thielemans and instrumental soloists such as Stephan Grappelli and Lester Young. He is supported by the masterful guitar playing of Nick Granville and the rhythm section of Patrick Bleakley on bass and Darren Mathiassen on drums.
The Neil Billington/Nick Granville band brings the best of jazz improvisation to everything they play and is infused with the raw emotional intensity of the blues.
