Every 3rd Sunday of the month we showcase four local songwriters and celebrate the rich culture and depth of talent we have here in Aotearoa.
This month we present.. The Faustians, Martin Andrews, Beans Wright, and Billy Lyrical.
With the banjo, fiddle, guitar and bass, and the wailing vocals of their Oldtime Appalachian roots, The Faustians have veered off course into a strange world of lost souls, bleak plains and cries for help from the dystopian dreamscapes of Helena’s original songwriting.
Martin Andrews is a singer/songwriter from Pōneke, Aotearoa. He writes blues and country based songs of humanity, mixing story telling with lived experience. For this show he will be playing songs from his upcoming fourth album “Hands” and will be joined by long time friend and collaborator, Scott Pilgrim.
Beans is a recent fixture in the Pōneke folk scene, importing a wild array of original songs and generally embodying the classic singer songwriter formula – introvert plus guitar. They gained international acclaim in 2021 as a finalist in the Liverpool International Song Contest, and have since performed at small venues and festivals across Australia and Aotearoa. They are also one third of folk trio 'Don & the Divorcees', but are known for solo shows which are rich with humour, honesty and interesting word choices. Expect to feel things.
Billy Lyrical has been writing, singing, busking, mixing, composing and performing for over 40 years. Like a mix of Tom Waits, Tom Lehrer and Woody Guthrie, he's written hundreds of songs and played thousands of gigs. He's not on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter, Linkedin, Spotify, Tumblr, Tindr, Grindr, Onlyfans or Pornhub. He's alive and kicking, living in the moment, rocking in the pocket, riffing this condition. We're now entering an Extinction Event, Please extinguish your cigarettes.
