On The Grid is about the marking, passing and embellishing of time. The Grid is life, time, tone, tonality, rhythm, gravity, momentum, and style.
The musicians work at times together, other times separately as 3 ensembles (horn quintet, string quartet, piano trio), and other times as combinations conversing and improvising amongst themselves. The music covers a selection of different styles and feels within and outside the jazz sound - and it's ready for your participation as a listener of melodies, dancer of beats, expresser of moods, theorist of lore, interpreter of meaning, and feeler of feels.
On The Grid consists of brand new music arranged and composed especially for the Jazz Composer Orchestra series, originally curated and presented by Michael Costeloe with funding from Creative New Zealand in 2025. This show celebrates the release on CD of the group's first ever performance - buy a copy and help us take On The Grid to more audiences around Aotearoa and the world.
