Search and Reflect, by the legendary drummer & improviser John Stevens, is a compilation of pieces/exercises/activities/vehicles for developing the collaboration, listening, trust and communal and convivial spirit required for group musical improvisation.
Informed by his own research and performance practice in improvisation, Jake Baxendale will lead an exploration of the book, choosing a number of pieces to perform with the participants, showing how its exacting, precise investigation of musical elements provides a blueprint for friendly, open & free musical happenings.
About John Stevens: One of the founding fathers of free improvisation in Britain. In the mid-'60s, Stevens helped found Spontaneous Music Ensemble (SME), an influential group that included most of England's top experimental jazz musicians.
About Jake Baxendale: a saxophonist and composer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Jake Baxendale performs regularly at venues throughout the city, and has performed extensively overseas.
A second workshop will take place on Wednesday 24th September, 7:30PM
