Gig Information

Two new bands featuring saxophonist and composer, Jake Baxendale:

The trio (with Andy Wright and Isaac Smith) has been working on a vibe for the last 3 years and this will be their first gig!

The quintet will be a happy meeting of awesome musical minds (Ruby Solly, Tom Callwood, Dan Beban & Andy Wright), who will play some of Jake's tunes from a new set called Sky Meets Country.

As featured in the jazz orchestra composer series, these new compositions utilise tools Jake developed for his Gardening Music ensemble: but where that music takes a granular approach to musical cells, simulating the inward posture of grubbing around in the earth, this new work expands outward to capture the feeling of vastness that open landscapes, bush canopies, and wide, blue skies can inspire.

--

Ruby Solly (Waitaha, Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe) is a musician, taonga pūoro practitioner, and writer living in Pōneke. She has played with musicians such as Yo-yo Ma, Whirimako Black, and Marlon Williams, as well as composed for small group and orchestra such as the Auckland Philharmonia. Ruby is currently working on a book exploring the use of taonga pūoro in hauora, which was the focus of her PhD in Public Health.

-

Tom Callwood (double bass) is an improvisor and collaborator who has performed throughout NZ and the UK. He’s a regular in the local experimental and popular music scenes with bands including The Phoenix Foundation, Teeth & Devils Gate Outfit.

-

Andy Wright - Fueled by the Exploration of non verbal shifting time space vector energy zones, Andy is a multidisciplinary visual artist, drummer, keyboardist and regular log on the fire of improv at the Pyramid Club.

-

Daniel Beban is a musician and sound artist who performs on a number of different instruments and builds sound sculptures and invented instruments out of found objects and recycled materials.

-

Isaac Smith is a bassist who also works with electronics. After spending several years in Columbo and Sri Lanka, Isaac is currently based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Isaac has a strong commitment to improvisation as a vehicle in the pursuit of awareness and balance.
