An exclusive concert for Wellington Jazz Festival at The Undercurrent.
Double bassist, bandleader and composer Alex Keatley presents Sounds from the Motherland — a vibrant and deeply personal journey into the rich world of South African jazz. Blending the infectious grooves of Cape jazz, the joyous spirit of kwela, and the harmonic sophistication of post-bop, this project pays tribute to the music of Abdullah Ibrahim, Nduduzo Makhathini, Bheki Mseleku, and Winston Mankunku Ngozi while offering bold new compositions inspired by their legacy.
Starting this project while studying his undergraduate degree at the University of Auckland Jazz School, Alex's band consists of friends he has met during his time studying in Auckland and is excited to share with you what they have been working on for the past year. Come along and enjoy the music with us.
