Nearer album release – with Welder Inc. (Naarm). + Deaf Edge (Pōneke)

Hail, Meteor! weave post-rock, dream pop and indie into powerful, bilingual tracts of song that explore grief, belonging, and aroha. Their new album, Nearer, is an album of delicate vastness; both nostalgic and immediate, it has a tone affecting the many generations that make up both the band’s audience and members.

Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the members of HM! have roots in multiple past projects and have shared the stage with the local as well as international acts. HM! played support for Scotland’s Mogwai at the Wellington Opera House in February 2024 and headlined the Gathering Shadows festival the month previous. This October 10th they play at Moon in Newtown to launch their forthcoming album.

Nearer further deepens their signature sound, broadening the scope suggested by their 2023 debut, Fourth Horse. With ten songs dripping with sonic, lyrical and exploratory intent, it is their honour to let it loose on both vinyl and streaming. Its shoe-gazing lead single, ‘Sweet’, was a hit on student radio back in the autumn, topping the SRN charts for weeks on end. Nearer’s next single, ‘Most at Ease’, drives home their pop intent with forceful synths, dark guitars and sweet harmonies.
An all-in-house production team, the album was recorded and mixed by David Coventry at Meteor HQ, Aotearoa, with artwork by Isobel Te Aho-White and design by Simon Waterfield.

Welder Inc. is the revived project of Wellington noise provocateur Jak Pepsi.

From time served in iconic Wellington noise acts Skinshed and Dome, to hosting Active 89FM’s Wild Wild Rock Show, the self-appointed Prince of Plaid returns to Te Whanganui-a-Tara to “keep making as much racket as possible”.

Captain Pepsi has assembled a shifting crew of new and familiar collaborators to weld this sonic space opera together.

Welder Inc: The Altair Chronicles – A grunge space opera science fiction soundtrack chronicling a day in the life of a blue-collar space welding crew.
Frustrated with the perception that science-fiction soundtracks tend to be epic, pretty, ambient, synth-driven masterpieces, this record takes a different tack.

Side A features every bang, clank, hum, feedback and drone you’d expect to find on a clapped-out service starship, telling the story of a crew repairing an outpost on Altair 9 after a sulphur fire.

Side B finds our intrepid bunch unwinding in the crew mess after their return home—shooting the shit and listening and watching their favourite music and movies.

Deaf Edge is a unique musical act. MaryJane Thomson is a poet and musician who was born deaf. This has not impeded her from pursuing her musical vocation. Her mesmerizing compositions are rhythmically hypnotic and lyrically informed by the interior world of someone who does not experience sound in a typical way.

MaryJane’s keyboards and vocals are accompanied by guitar/synth played by Simon Cuming; Deaf Edge present themes of existentialism, individual and collective through poetic analogy and form, pulsating with dreamlike whisper and evocative crooning.
