Every month we showcase four of our amazing songwriters and celebrate the rich culture and depth of talent we have in Aotearoa.
This month our four great acts are Adoneye, Ali Whitton, The Brooklyns and Zach Newton
Adoneye
Dean, lead singer from Adoneye, performing stripped back acoustic versions of their songs. Written with liberating honesty about bittersweet truths, metal alchemy and the human condition. Inspired by the raw emotion of rock and grunge and the crafted lyrics of the singer songwriter style.
Ali Whitton
Born in Aotearoa and raised in rural North Yorkshire, Ali’s music blends introspective folk, alt-country, and acoustic storytelling, drawing inspiration from artists like Nick Drake, Bright Eyes, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. With poetic lyrics rooted in nature and emotional honesty, his songs explore themes of longing, resilience, and cosmic wonder. After an early career touring the UK and France — including sharing stages with Ed Sheeran — Ali settled in Aotearoa New Zealand where salty sea winds and bush covered landscapes continue to shape his sound.
The Brooklyns
The Brooklyns is an indie rock, folk, country band that sprang from the Wellington hills ten years ago, rehearsing in the shadow of the Brooklyn turbine, and playing originals written by all members of the band. Nowadays they rehearse and play on the Kāpiti Coast and in the Wairarapa, too, where band members are based. They are: Don Mackay (mandolin, guitar); Mary McCallum (guitar, banjo, ukulele); Heather Drysdale (ukulele, percussion); Shannon Hennig (fiddle, cajon); Rob Hunter (bass).
Zach Newton
Zach Newton is a singer-songwriter who enjoys performing and recording music. Zach’s songs have touched the hearts and soothed the ears of venues all the way from the suburbs of Newtown, to the far-away Wellington CBD. For this showcase, he will be performing intimate, acoustic versions of his original songs.
