Unknown Mortal Orchestra Announces New Zealand Tour

Thursday 20th August, 2015 9:00AM

Portland-based musician Ruban Nielson is bringing the Unknown Mortal Orchestra home for five dates in December. The string of shows follow the release of UMO's highly acclaimed third album Multi-Love and will be the first time the act has performed on New Zealand soil since 2014's Laneway Festival. Coming along for the ride are Nielson's American cohorts, bassist Jacob Portrait, drummer Riley Geare and keyboardist Quincy McCrary, and all dates will be supported by Auckland-based artist Fazerdaze. Here are the details...

Update 16/11: Fazerdaze is replacing the orginally announced support act Las Tetas, and a second Wellington show has been added for 18th December

“… It’s guitar riffery and sweet, strong melodies tinged with loneliness and listlessness”– NZ Herald, 5 stars

“Within the first 30 seconds of opening track Can’t Keep Checking My Phone, you know you’re in the presence of genius” – Sunday Star Times, 5 stars

“If Prince had listened to The Mint Chicks third album Screens and then collaborated with Ruban Nielson himself, I’m not sure we’d have a finer album than we have here” –

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – the Portland via New Zealand outfit fronted by psychedelic visionary Ruban Nielson – will return to New Zealand for a highly anticipated run of national dates in December.

Nielson will be joined by his cohorts from his adopted hometown – bassist Jacob Portrait, drummer Riley Geare, and keyboardist Quincy McCrary. The shows will mark UMO’s first shows back in New Zealand since their exclusive date at the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival in 2014.

Already one of the year’s best albums, Multi-Love follows the introspective and road-weary II (2013) and their self-titled 2011 debut, which blew the lid off the bedroom project started by Nielson following his relocation to Portland and the dissolution of the Mint Chicks.

Though conceived in the bedroom, UMO are a force to be reckoned with on stage. With Geare and Portrait locking down a tight groove, Nielson’s guitar prowess really comes to the fore. The band’s songs often descend into extended psychedelic jams, and with the addition of McCrary on keys, their new material – as well as favourites from their first two records – has taken on an extra dimension live. Don’t miss them when they play songs from Multi-Love in New Zealand for the very first time.

Multi-Love is out now on Jagjaguwar and proudly distributed in New Zealand by Rhythmethod.
