Girl Talk + More Added To Auckland City Limits 2016

Thursday 4th February, 2016 8:53AM

Pittsburgh native Gregg Gillis aka Girl Talk will be bringing his mash-up madness to the inaugural Auckland City Limits in March. In the final line-up announcement for 2016, festival organisers have also revealed that a Golden Dawn pop-up bar will grace the one-day event - creating an area akin to the Big Day Out's old Lilyworld.

Curated by Matthew Crawley, the Golden Dawn zone will offer an eclectic mix of entertainment with musical offerings from Delaney Davidson, Shab Orkestra, Carnivorous Plant Society, Hopetoun Brown and more. Here are the full final lineup details...

PRESS RELEASE:

AUCKLAND CITY LIMITS MUSIC FESTIVAL
ADDS GIRL TALK AND GOLDEN DAWN POP UP
IN FESTIVAL LINEUP

Genre-mashing sampling genius Girl Talk leads the final additions to the Auckland City Limits lineup announced today.

Girl Talk and fresh-faced Auckland pop-punk sensation Openside are added to the festival’s stadium and outer field stages while the festival Is delighted to announce that fabled Ponsonby institution, The Golden Dawn Tavern of Power, will pop up with a lakeside stage at Western Springs to complete the Auckland City Limits lineup of forty artists.

Girl Talk brings the party to ACL. Pittsburgh native Gregg Gillis’s show is a blur of sampling mayhem as he mixes dozens of elements into his original works. Girl Talk shows are notorious for over the top crowd participation.

The Golden Dawn promise a whole ‘nother level of party lakeside at the festival. The five-year-old Ponsonby bar began as a pop-up experiment mixing live music, great DJs and forays into live comedy with craft beer, tasty food and good company.

ACL marks the very first time this carefully developed and guarded brand has headed off-site in what promises to be as faithful a reproduction of the tavern as they can muster.

ACL promoter Campbell Smith says “The Golden Dawn marches to its own beat and has been tremendously successful in doing just that. I wanted to add an element of the 'comfortable but unusual' to the ACL menu and this is perfect.”

Smith added that he wanted to also pay homage to the late, lamented Lilyworld at Big Day Out so gave Golden Dawn the premium lakeside space with the single instruction of “’Do whatever you want.”

The Golden Dawn crew has taken up the challenge, delivering an eclectic programme of bands, comedians and DJs and packing up bar fittings and furniture to ensure that authentic Golden Dawn vibe will be rocking all day long by the lake at ACL.

Golden Dawn’s Matthew Crawley says “We are super duper excited to be taking our show on the road! The ACL ethos matches our local focus, and we love the idea of being lakeside with our friends at the festival. Keep an open mind and we’ll be sure to fill it up with curios, surprises and wonders!”

Musical highlights packed into Golden Dawn include Delaney Davidson’s voodoo stumble down dusty pathways, the bluesy blast of Hopetoun Brown’s horns, the sci-fi spaghetti western excursions of the wondrous Carniverous Plant Society, Shab Orkestra’s loop’n’brass dreamscapes, the primitivist Storehouse Blues (once dubbed ‘Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin Hopkins’ by NME) and the simply indescribable silver-suited Austrian, Peter Baecker LIVE.

Comedy ranges from the lightbulb eating antics and manic observations of Christchurch born Filipino David Correos to the anti-standup of Auckland’s Joseph Harper and the absurdist musings of Paul Amos.

Also on the bill are Amorous Ava taking the art of burlesque and body slamming it to the floor, and a top drawer DJ lineup including expat Dan Mancini’s TSR Airlines direct from LA where he performs with friends and luminaries from Daft Punk to Ladyhawke, TV Disko, a vinyl only excursion to the unusual corners of a record collection encompassing everything from rare French soundtracks to Hungarian 80s pop, and local spinner of rare and exciting exotica, lounge and soul, DJ House of Bamboo.
