Nite Jewel Announces Debut New Zealand Shows

Lovers of left-field dance will be thrilled to hear US electronic artist Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez) has announced her first ever New Zealand shows this coming November! With songs that occupy a zone between upbeat club sounds and introspective hypnogogia, this year's breakout album Real High has been deservedly lauded for it's fresh-eyed blend of pop, R'n'B and dancehall. Real High was recorded in collaboration with Grammy award-winning producer Cole M.G.N., and the LA artist has been in hot demand working with such talents as Dam-Funk, Omar-S and Julia Holter. Performing as a duo for both shows, she'll be joined by witch-in-the-club Ducklingmonster in Auckland and Alexa Casino and Magic & Steel in Wellington.

On the 1st and the 2nd of November, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and producer Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez) makes her long-awaited New Zealand debut, through two intimate shows at Meow (Wellington) and Golden Dawn (Auckland).

Wednesday 1st Nov, Meow, Wellington, Doors open 8pm, Nite Jewel on stage 9.30pm. Thursday 2nd Nov, Golden Dawn, Auckland. Doors open 8pm.

One of the most prolific artists to emerge out of California’s sprawling D.I.Y underground over the last decade, Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez) arrives in New Zealand hot on the heels of her critically acclaimed new album Real High.

With Real High, Ramona updates her feminine inner dialogue to reflect the increasing challenges of hyper-modern society, in particular with respect to selfhood. Recorded over the course of four years in Los Angeles with the help of Grammy-winning producer Cole M.G.N. (Ariel Pink, Beck, The Samps), these songs of transformational love and relentless nostalgia range from expansive, futuristic balladry (“Real High,” “Part Of Me”) to gauzy dance-floor hits (“2 Good 2 Be True,” “The Answer”); the most focused and bold Nite Jewel effort yet. The timeless production, unique voice, and pristine song-craft of Real High create an irresistible combination only bettered when Ramona presents it live.

Aside from Real High, in recent years, Ramona has shared her a B-sides collection Real Low, last year’s album Liquid Cool, a limited edition 12” for Italians Do It Better, and two collaborative EPs (one with Bay Area rapper/producer Droop-E as AMTHST).

If you’re not familiar with her from her solo work, you might know her from her very memorable collaborations with Dam-Funk, Omar-S, Julia Holter, Sean Nicholas Savage, Samantha Urbani, Zoë Kravitz and many others — transforming foggy, fading memories into crystal clear, lucid dreams. In a testament to this, her EP release with Dam-Funk (as Nite Funk) was named Best New Music on Pitchfork.

At both shows, Nite Jewel will be performing live in a duo format, with local support from Ducklingmonster in Auckland, and Alexa Casino + Magic & Steel in Wellington.
